Heineken Thirst Studio

All of us, especially Chak and Sen Kiat, were bogged down with recording tracks for the upcoming Heineken Thirst Studio competition. Competition dateline was on Sunday (July 30) and we managed to submit our entry on erm…..Sunday nite. Yup, not exactly the lazy sunday we were hoping for but it does feel nice to be productive on a weekend for a change.

Anyway, these pictures were taken from Sen Kiat’s blog. He’s got this whole “world according to Sen Kiat” thingy going on. Check it out!

The Laundry Gig

As a highlight for a week that has been pretty hectic for the band, we played at Laundry on Thursday.  There’s an article in The Star about the place today.  Now I’ve already told you how much we were looking forward to playing there and to prove that point, this was the first time everyone (yes ….EVERYONE) looked all spiffy on stage at the same time.  I managed to  not wear the total opposite of everone else & Bala steered away from his Killer Panda shirt!  Yup, we are (were?) walking contradictions of metrosexual rock.  How did that label come up anyway?  Sen Kiat & Chak still give us hope though.

On the whole, it was a decent show although I guess feeling spent after the sleepless nights recording Same Way I Do & Rollercoaster this week might have robbed us of the ability to put up a super show.  (as opposed to a decent show)  We’ll post some pictures of the show soon.

Anyhow, it’s back to recording mode as we head down to Standing Wave Studio (Meng’s place) to review same way, out of body & rollercoaster.  Shit I’m late.

Superbar will be featured on a compilation CD

The news isn’t out yet, but we thought we’ll let you guys in on a little teaser. “Out of Body” is now a done deal thanks to the production expertise of Senzr and Meng from Standing Wave Studios, Subang. We’ll be included in an up-coming compilation CD, which will be launched as a collaborative effort between a magazine, a telco and the world’s largest coffee chain. In line with that, you will be seeing a lot more activity happening in August in support of this.

(P.S - I think Chak might’ve spilt the beans in his myspace posting :P)

A continuation…

“The Aftermath of Troubadours (kudos and ringtones)
Current mood: bouncy
Category: Dreams and the Supernatural

In my last entry, I mentioned that I was looking forward more to the Troubadours acoustic gig rather than our rock-out Central Market one.

Guess what?

That one gig netted us two blog entries (from other people la), a radio interview and more than a few fans. Since then, we’ve also played at alliance francaise (i think that spelling is wrong) and one of our songs (Out of Body) is about to be featured on the KLUE decibel 02 CD.

It’s sponsored by DiGi so we’re going to have a ringtone to accompany the compilation.

OUR FIRST RINGTONE!

Fuck the whole selling out rant… If this is what selling out means, then I’m sold!Anyhows, we’re not your typical serious rock band anyway… I think one of the most important things about being in a band (especially at our age) is to not to take it overly seriously.

We’re here to have a good time, and perhaps to share our music with a few good men and women. And that’s what we’re doing. and our grandkids will hear no end to how we got our songs into ringtones when we were kids. Ok, we’re not really kids anymore, but lets not spoil the mood of this happy entry.

Go buy our ringtones!”

Fete de la Musique

We also played at this year’s Fete on June 17th. The event was held at two locations, Bangsar and Alliance Francaise, Jalan Semarak. Our slot was at Alliance Francaise, in the afternoon. The event at Alliance Francaise was divided into 4 stages scattered all over the place, so that people can walk around and check out an eclectic selection of music, both French & Malaysian. We managed to catch up with a couple of guys who have performed with us previously - Flow (a reggae-funk band who played a gig at Little Havana yesterday, but we had to skip it unfortunately), Y2K, Peter Brown, Azmyl and Sei Hon. Nothing much to report about coz it all happened in a daze and there were no photographs to show.

Oh yeah, except for a notice to one of the groups that played in the afternoon. They played indoors and had a didgeridoo and a whole bunch of percussions. I thought that band was awesome but could not catch the whole show coz they played the same time we did. We really would like to know who they are.
We also managed to get some positive comments from Rex, a radio DJ from XFresh FM, who happened to be at our set. Oh yeah, Bala mentioned the other day that Rollercoaster’s now playing on XFresh FM. :)

La Bodega video

This will be up once we figure out how to use the friggin’ plug-in. Anybody care to help out here?

Chak’s posting on Myspace (Part 1)

To those of you who are not aware of this, we also have an account on myspace. You’ll be able to check out our tracks there as well as those of the bands that we’ve shared stage with previously.

Anyway, Chak uses myspace account to let out his thoughts on the band and we thought it’ll be great to include them here for your reading pleasure. This is a postmortem of the World Press Freedom Day gig at CM & the Troubagangers gig at La Bodega.

“A cool stick?
Current mood: bored

Damn…To be honest, last Sunday I was more looking forward to the La Bodega gig. I dunno, somehow I think that the Central Market crowd might not have been Superbar’s target audience.

Sound a bit aloof? That’s what the organiser said about me too (about us la, but I think a large part of that falls on me, unfortunately). But we’re not saying, they’re not worthy.

Actually, the opposite. We’re not worthy. I don’t think I have the necessary skillset to get a predominantly Malay crowd going. It’s just that I feel this disconnect from them when I speak my England. Last time I tried speaking Malay, I managed to clear a 300-strong crowd in 30 seconds. My Malay C6 la. Lisan fail. Sorry.

And its not that hoitytoity nose-up crap either. Fuck man, the last time I went to Rock The World at Stadium Merdeka, it was my first time in the middle of a mosh pit, and I realised what the predominantly Chinese raver crowd was missing. In a mosh pit, no one cares what you’re wearing, how you dance or who you touch when your arms are flailing around like a madman. You’re just there letting your body parts go nuts. And it’s FUCKING AWESOME!

Fuck, I’d love to get a crowd like that going, but I don’t know how. I know I’m probably gonna get banged in this post for alienating the Malay crowd, but then again, I think chances are slim that they’d be fans anyway.

Anyhows, the crowd in La Bodega was fucking awesome though. I was having a chat with Sen Kiat the other day, saying that when people tell me that Same Way I Do is awesome, I get this fucking high like you can’t believe. There. I said it. Don’t look at me funny if my eyes close and I make quivering noises when you pay us a compliment. Anyway, I was asking him what it is about being in a band that he likes. He said that the ultimate pay-off is when someone out there feels what you’re trying to channel into the song (in less complicated, slightly stonier words, but something to that effect anyway). And I think that’s why we love playing together - for the same reasons.

And La Bodega was full of moments like that. I got more than a few people asking me how I write the songs, telling us how we rawked n stuff, but the best moments were when two people simply told me that they really felt the Same Way I Do.

Ah… a pun. perfect way to end my first myspace blog entry. Thanks guys. We love you all. Rock never Die!!!!

PS: if you ever wanna start a mosh pit for Lazy Sunday, I will crowd-surf and cover your medical expenses later.”

One month hiatus

The fact that it’s been a month since we last posted anything on this site would probably make all of you think that football has grinded Superbar to a halt, not to mention the endless happy nights Suren has been having ever since England packed their bags. Actually, the silence has been more of a technical error rather than anything. Yup, Suren (most of the postings are a result of his ramblings) lost his password. Yeah, we too have our bimbo moments, unfortunately. Anyway, there’ll be a flood of postings today about the things that have happened, including a video of our Troubaganger show. Stay tuned!

Chak Says WTF
And how did Chak react when he heard about the lost password?
